Honest comparison · Governance intelligence

The layer above your delivery tool. An objective look at where Jira, Asana, Microsoft Planner, and PROJECT RE:WIRED each belong in your stack.

Most vendor comparisons are structured to embarrass the competition. This one is not. Jira, Asana, and Microsoft Planner are excellent at what they were built to do, and any honest evaluation has to start there.

The short version: Jira, Asana, and Planner are systems of record for work. PROJECT RE:WIRED is a layer for governance intelligence that sits above them. The two categories are complementary, not competitive. Removing your delivery tool and replacing it with us would degrade your team's ability to deliver. Removing your governance layer and expecting your delivery tool to fill the gap is what most PMOs are doing today, and it is why Friday afternoons are spent hand-assembling status packs.

Part 1, What Jira, Asana, and Planner do well

These are the categories where each tool leads. If your problem is in any of the areas below, buy the tool named beside it. We are not a substitute.

Jira

the reference implementation for engineering-led delivery

  • • Agile boards, sprints, story points, epics and velocity have been the standard for over a decade. If you ship software, nothing else comes close.
  • • JQL, custom workflows and the Marketplace let mature teams model almost any process, the reason Fortune 500 IT organisations standardise on it.
  • • Developer toolchain integration, git, CI/CD, deployment tracking, is unmatched across Bitbucket, GitHub, GitLab and Jenkins.
  • • Advanced Roadmaps and the new Strategic Intelligence bundle give engineering leadership a genuine cross-project scheduling view.

Asana

the strongest work-management story for non-engineering teams

  • • The workflow rule builder and AI Studio are genuinely good, intake forms that route, apply rules and notify owners take minutes to build.
  • • Asana Portfolios provide a real cross-project rollup for status and progress, with custom fields aggregated at the portfolio level.
  • • Native time tracking on Advanced and Enterprise removes the third-party timesheet dependency most competitors have.
  • • Goals link work to strategic outcomes in a way Jira and Planner do not. For teams running OKRs, this is a differentiator.

Microsoft Planner

the right choice if your organisation lives in Microsoft 365

  • • Native Teams embedding puts work in the same window as the conversation about it, no context switching, no separate login.
  • • The Planner Copilot agent (GA June 2026) is conversational and useful, it summarises risks from meetings and answers plan questions in natural language.
  • • For M365 customers, Planner is effectively free at Basic and included at Premium in most Enterprise licences. The economics are hard to beat.
  • • Power Automate integration means Planner tasks can trigger any workflow in the Microsoft ecosystem.

Part 2, What we do not do (and are not building)

If any of these are on your critical path, keep your existing tool. We do not duplicate them, and we are not going to.

  • Agile boards, sprints, and backlogs

No boards, no story points, no velocity. Jira is the answer, and we are not going to write a second-best version of it.

  • Workflow automation engines

Asana's rule builder, Jira automation and Power Automate are mature products. We do not compete with them.

  • Task-level chat and collaboration

No comment threads on every task. Planner's Teams-embedded task chat is the right pattern; conversation belongs in the tool the team uses daily.

  • Developer tooling

No git integration, no CI/CD hooks, no release management. If your projects ship software, your delivery tool is the source of truth for that work, we read from it.

  • Native time tracking

We do not track time or produce timesheets. Asana Advanced or a dedicated tool like Harvest or Toggl are the right answers.

  • A rich native task layer

Our task and timeline views exist so imported data has somewhere to live and be inspected. If you try to run a team in them you will find them thin, by design.

"We sit above your work management tool, not beside it. Your team keeps working the way they already work."

Part 3, Where we are architecturally different

A shorter list than most vendor pages give you, deliberately narrow. What is on the list, we do properly.

Persisted governance history, not conversational answers

Ask Planner Copilot about risk exposure and it drafts an answer; close the chat and it is gone. PROJECT RE:WIRED persists risk exposure as a scored, dated number that trends over time. The difference is not which AI is smarter, it is whether the output is ephemeral or auditable.

A cross-tool intelligence layer, not a single-source view

Jira reports on Jira data. Asana on Asana. Planner on M365. We read from all three simultaneously, alongside Confluence, Teams and Slack, and produce a unified governance view, one coherent picture instead of three separate dashboards.

Scope drift with cumulative financial exposure

None of the three delivery tools calculates cumulative scope movement across many small approved changes. Ours does, and expresses the drift in both percentage and financial terms against a locked baseline.

A 10-dimension Governance Maturity Assessment with benchmarking

There is no equivalent in Jira, Asana or Planner. A structured evaluation across ten dimensions of governance practice, producing a benchmarked score and a specific improvement roadmap, a diagnostic, not a dashboard.

Board-ready governance packs generated from live data

The delivery tools produce dashboards and AI-drafted status text. Neither is a governance pack, a narrative document a steering committee can be held to, with risks scored, decisions attributed, scope drift quantified, and delivery confidence rationalised. Ours is generated in minutes from live data across connected tools.

Automated RAID with deduplication, provenance, and portfolio aggregation

Jira and Asana can hold RAID-shaped data in custom fields. Planner Copilot can extract action items from transcripts. Neither offers probability × impact scoring, exposure trending, deduplication of items re-mentioned across meetings, or portfolio-wide aggregation.

Part 4, The full comparison

Ordered the way you should read it: start with the delivery layer (where the three tools lead), move through the reporting middle ground, and end with the governance intelligence layer (where we sit).

Footnotes on partial capabilities

  • • Roadmap and Gantt views in Planner. Planner supports basic timeline and schedule views, but Gantt-style dependencies and critical-path scheduling require Project for the Web or Project Online.
  • • Our timeline view. PROJECT RE:WIRED includes a project timeline and task list so imported data can be inspected in context. It is not a replacement for a work-management Gantt.
  • • Native Teams / M365 embedding. Jira and Asana both have Teams apps, but they are launched inside a Teams tab rather than woven natively into Teams conversations the way Planner is.
  • • Jira and Asana portfolio views. Jira Advanced Roadmaps and Asana Portfolios both provide cross-project rollup within their own ecosystem. Neither aggregates data from other tools. Advanced Roadmaps requires Jira Premium or Enterprise.
  • • RAID scoring in Jira and Asana. Both can be configured to store RAID-shaped data using custom fields or Marketplace apps. Neither ships probability × impact scoring, exposure trending, or portfolio aggregation as native functionality.
  • • Dependency tracking. Jira and Asana both support task-level dependencies natively. PROJECT RE:WIRED analyses dependencies at the governance level (critical path, delay risk, cross-project impact) but is not the place to model day-to-day task blockers.
  • • Workload and capacity. Asana Workload is the strongest native offering. Jira has capacity planning through Advanced Roadmaps. Planner shows workload per member but not weighted capacity. PROJECT RE:WIRED interprets workload across imported data with signal-based alerting rather than task-level assignment.

Part 5, The "but they all have AI now" question

This is the most reasonable objection to a governance intelligence category. Jira has Atlassian Intelligence and the Strategic Intelligence bundle. Asana has AI Studio. Planner has the Copilot agent. All three genuinely help with the writing part of governance work, drafting status updates, summarising risks, answering questions in natural language.

Here is the honest distinction. Their AI features draft text and answer questions. A governance intelligence layer keeps a durable record. When Planner Copilot tells you that risk exposure has increased, that is a helpful conversational answer. When PROJECT RE:WIRED tells you the same thing, it is because a scored, dated exposure number moved from 42 to 51 between March and April, and both values are queryable next quarter when a sponsor asks how you knew.

Neither approach is objectively better in every situation. If you need faster status reports and better in-tool summaries, the AI in your delivery tool is the right upgrade. If you need an auditable governance record that trends over time and produces board-ready narratives from live data across multiple tools, that is what we do.

A note on data governance

From August 2026, Atlassian's data contribution policy collects metadata and in-app data from Jira and Confluence Cloud by default to train its AI models. Only Enterprise customers can fully opt out. PROJECT RE:WIRED does not train models on customer project data, and our Teams and Microsoft 365 connectivity is metadata-only by architecture, message content is never read. If your PMO is in a regulated industry, this is worth including in vendor due diligence for any AI-heavy tool.

Part 6, Who should not buy PROJECT RE:WIRED

Honesty cuts both ways. There are three groups for whom we are the wrong answer.

You have a task management problem, not a governance problem
If work is falling through cracks, ownership is unclear, or there is no single backlog, buy one of Jira, Asana, or Planner. Fix delivery first. A governance layer sits above a working delivery system; it cannot substitute for one.
You run a single project with a tolerant sponsor and no reporting obligations
You do not need a governance layer. A well-maintained spreadsheet is genuinely fine, and the effort of adopting any platform is not repaid by a single project.
You want one tool for everything
That tool does not exist. Any vendor selling it to you is misleading you, and the fifteen years of consolidation attempts across this category are the evidence.

But if you are a senior PM or PMO lead running delivery competently in Jira, Asana, or Planner, and still spending Friday afternoons hand-assembling RAID logs, risk narratives, and steering packs from data those tools hold but cannot interpret, that gap in the table above is your job description's worst part. It is also, deliberately and only, what PROJECT RE:WIRED does.

Your work management tool is fine. Keep it. We will read from it.

Category differentiation

Project Governance Above Jira

Most project tools track tasks. PROJECT RE:WIRED helps leadership teams understand governance, reporting quality, delivery confidence, escalation visibility, and PM performance above operational Jira data.

The platform transforms scattered reporting into governance intelligence for executives, PMs, delivery leaders, and enterprise transformation teams.

Not Another PM Tool. A Governance Intelligence Layer.

PROJECT RE:WIRED doesn't replace your tools of record. It creates structured intelligence above them, governance, maturity, risk, and delivery confidence normalized for leadership.

Cross-System Normalization

Pull from Jira, Asana, Slack, Teams, and documents into one structured intelligence layer. No more chasing collaborators for status, the data speaks for itself.

Maturity Intelligence

Score projects across 10 governance dimensions. Track who's improving, who's stalling, and where systemic capability gaps threaten delivery across the portfolio.

Governance Health Engine

Continuously detect unowned risks, overdue actions, missing decision logs, and unvalidated assumptions, surfacing the gaps your steering committee will ask about before they do.

Portfolio Risk Visibility

Heatmaps, early warning signals, and severity-ranked attention lists. Give leadership a single view of delivery risk across every project in the portfolio.

Delivery Confidence Forecast

Forecast slippage, stalled decisions, and governance failure signals before they escalate. Data-driven confidence scoring replaces gut-feel status updates.

Leadership-Ready Output

Every insight is source-traced, editable, and formatted for boards and steering committees, structured governance intelligence, not raw AI chat output.

Our obsession

We are obsessed with giving project managers their time back, and lifting the quality of every report they ship.

Project management is one of the most under-supported professions in the modern enterprise. PMs carry the delivery, write the reports, chase the risks, and absorb the pressure, usually with tooling built for engineers or generic task tracking. PROJECT RE:WIRED exists for them.

Hours back in your week

Every feature is judged against one question, does this give a project manager an hour back? If not, it doesn't ship. Status reports, RAID logs, risk registers, executive briefs, all designed to compress days of admin into minutes.

Better than what you'd write yourself

Speed is meaningless if quality drops. Every output is grounded in your project's own data, structured to PMI and PRINCE2 conventions, and tuned to read like the work of a senior PMO professional, not generic AI prose.

Defensible in front of the steering committee

Project managers stake their credibility on every report. We obsess over defensibility, every claim traceable to source data, every score explained, every recommendation accompanied by the reasoning behind it.

Best practice, baked in

Every artefact recommends the next best move grounded in PMI, PRINCE2, and modern delivery conventions, so PMs get coaching, not just output. The right structure, the right cadence, the right governance habits, applied automatically.

Predictive findings

Roadmap

Surfacing risks, slippage signals, and governance gaps before they materialise, so project managers act on problems while they are still cheap to fix.

Scenario modelling

Roadmap

Stress-test schedule, scope, and resource decisions in seconds. Compare delivery paths, model the impact of a change request, and walk into the conversation with a defensible recommendation.

If we ever stop saving you time or improving the quality of your work, we've failed. That standard sits above every roadmap decision we make.

PM Activities

AI Project Governance Intelligence Modules home.activities.titleAccent

The hub is organised around what project managers actually do every week, not around AI features. PROJECT RE:WIRED supports, accelerates, and elevates these activities, reclaiming hours of PM time each week by turning the Jira, MS Project, and spreadsheet data that already sits there into governance-ready outputs, no extra data entry required.

Gap analysis

Identify Hidden Governance Gaps

PROJECT RE:WIRED helps organisations detect project management governance gaps across reporting quality, escalation visibility, delivery confidence, and PMO consistency.

The platform enables governance gap analysis using AI-driven reporting intelligence across enterprise portfolios.

Reporting quality

Surface inconsistent status updates, missing RAG rationale, and stale narratives before they reach the steering committee.

Escalation visibility

Catch unresolved risks, overdue actions, and silent blockers that never make it into executive packs or portfolio reviews.

Delivery confidence

Triangulate schedule signals, scope drift, and dependency exposure to score how trustworthy each project's forecast really is.

PMO consistency

Detect deviations from your governance baseline, missing templates, skipped reviews, and gaps in cadence across teams and BUs.

RE:WIRED vs Strategic Portfolio Management

Governance intelligence without an SPM overhaul

Traditional Strategic Portfolio Management platforms, OnePlan, Planview, ServiceNow SPM , demand migration, integration projects and re-training. RE:WIRED delivers the governance outcomes without the disruption.

No system migration or replacement

Keep Jira, Asana, Teams, Slack, Notion, Microsoft 365 and your spreadsheets. RE:WIRED sits above them as a governance layer, nothing to rip out, no data to move.

One view across every delivery tool

Jira, Asana, Teams, Slack, Notion, Microsoft 365 and spreadsheet intelligence unified into a single governance surface for PMs, PMOs and steering committees.

Evidence-linked risks and recommendations

Every risk, action and recommendation is traced back to the source document, ticket, meeting or message, no black-box AI, no unverifiable claims.

Automated steering packs in seconds

Governance reports, status packs and executive briefings generated on demand, not after two days of PM heroics in PowerPoint.

Maturity assessment and missing-control detection

10-dimension governance maturity scoring highlights the controls, artefacts and processes you're missing before an auditor or steering board finds them.

Deployment in hours, not months

Live in an afternoon versus the 6,12 month implementation cycles typical of OnePlan, Planview or ServiceNow SPM.

Built for teams SPM ignores

Designed for individual PMs, mid-market PMOs, consultancies and transformation teams that don't have, and don't want, a full Strategic Portfolio Management suite.

How to Choose · GIRF Framework

The Governance Intelligence Readiness Framework

Seven criteria that separate a real governance layer from a reporting wrapper. Apply them to any vendor in this category, including PROJECT RE:WIRED. Critical criteria are disqualifying if absent; high-weight criteria differentiate shortlisted vendors; the qualifying criterion is a hard prerequisite.

  1. Critical

    Criterion C1

    Baseline Preservation

Does the platform lock the original scope, budget and schedule as a read-only baseline before any changes are logged?

    Ask the vendor

"Show me the original baseline for a project mid-flight. Is it immutable? Can I compare it directly to today?"

  2. Critical

    Criterion C2

    Cumulative Movement Detection

Does it detect and quantify drift that accumulates gradually across many individually-small changes?

    Ask the vendor

"If I approve fifteen small changes each below the escalation threshold, do you show the cumulative scope movement and financial exposure?"

  3. High

    Criterion C3

    Decision Attribution

Are decisions recorded with the options considered, the decision-maker and the rationale, not just the outcome?

    Ask the vendor

"Show me your decision log. Can I see rejected options, the named decision-maker, the date, and export it as audit evidence?"

  4. Critical

    Criterion C4

    RAID Intelligence

Is the RAID log maintained automatically from live data, with probability × impact scoring and exposure trending?

    Ask the vendor

"Show me a risk added from a meeting transcript. Is it scored? Can I see the exposure trend over the last 90 days?"

  5. High

    Criterion C5

    Portfolio Aggregation

Does governance intelligence persist and aggregate across all projects, not only the one currently open?

    Ask the vendor

"Rank all projects by risk exposure and governance maturity in one view. Is it persisted, dated intelligence or a live calculation that disappears?"

  6. High

    Criterion C6

    Executive Extractability

Can a board-ready governance pack be produced in minutes from live data, without manual reformatting?

    Ask the vendor

"Generate a governance pack for a demo project right now. How long did it take? Is it a narrative document or a screenshot deck?"

  7. Qualifying

    Criterion C7

    Existing Toolchain Compatibility

Does it read from the delivery tools your team already uses, Jira, Asana, Planner, Teams, Slack, Confluence, without requiring migration?

    Ask the vendor

"Which tools do you connect to in production today via OAuth or webhooks? Show me a live Jira or Asana connection pulling real data."

Red flags: when to walk away

Any one warrants a hard question. More than two in the same demo, walk away.

  • The baseline is a number a PM types into a field.
  • The RAID log is a spreadsheet or list of custom fields with no scoring model.
  • Decisions are tracked only as Approved or Rejected, no options, no rationale.
  • Governance output exists per project but there is no aggregated portfolio view.
  • The board pack requires two hours of PowerPoint reformatting before every steering committee.
  • Integration is CSV import only, or the vendor cannot show a working live connector today.

Trusted by Governance Leaders

PMOs, steering committees, and delivery leaders use PROJECT RE:WIRED to surface the intelligence their project tools were never designed to provide

“PROJECT RE:WIRED surfaced six governance gaps across our portfolio in the first week, unowned risks, overdue decision logs, stalled change requests. The steering committee now has one intelligence layer instead of chasing PMs for fragmented updates.”

VP of Project Delivery

“Board reporting went from 8 hours to 20 minutes. But the real value? We caught a €400K scope exposure from unresolved change requests that no single tool was tracking. PROJECT RE:WIRED connected the dots across systems.”

Senior Programme Manager

“We've used every PM tool on the market. PROJECT RE:WIRED is the first that gives leadership structured intelligence about what's going wrong and why, not just task lists and Gantt charts. It's a governance layer, not another dashboard.”

What's a Core AI Action?

Everyday actions like weekly status reports, meeting summaries, RAID clean-up, stakeholder drafts, risk heatmaps, and document summaries. These are the daily habits that save you hours.

What's a Deep Analysis Run?

Complex multi-source reasoning tasks like risk prediction, executive decision briefs, dependency analysis, maturity benchmarking, and resource intelligence. Higher-cost operations that deliver deeper project insights.

What does "unlimited viewer invites" mean?

Every paid plan lets you invite an unlimited number of view-only stakeholders, sponsors, execs, clients, auditors, at no extra cost. They get read-only access to the outputs you share, forever. You only pay for creator seats (the people editing projects and running AI tools).

When does Free upgrade to Pro?

Free starts with a 60-day Pro trial, full access to every Pro feature, no card required. After day 60 your workspace stays free forever (1 project, core AI actions, full governance history preserved). Upgrade to Pro any time to unlock more projects, deep analysis runs, and advanced reporting.

What's included in governance history?

Every RAID entry, status report, decision log, meeting summary, approval, and AI-generated brief is preserved with timestamps and authorship, even after the Pro trial ends or you downgrade. Your audit trail is yours, permanently, on every plan including Free.
